100 years ago,1911

Struck by a falling trolley wire as he was in his sleigh at the corner of College and Sabattus streets early last evening, Elmer A. Bickford of the No Name Pond Road had a narrow escape with his life. He was knocked unconscious, thrown 20 feet into the street, but it is believed he was not seriously injured. The electrical display caused by the falling wire was remarkable.

50 years ago, 1961

The proposed construction program of the Auburn Water District for the next two years was outlined yesterday at a hearing before the Maine Public Utilities Commission.

The district is seeking permission to float a bond issue for $600,000. It would provide about $400,000 for capital improvements — mostly the laying of new water mains and $180,000 for redeeming short-term notes.

25 years ago, 1986

Some 1,100 employees and volunteers at Central Maine Medical Center have completed workshops as part of a recently implemented guest-relations program called Hospitality, according to CMMC Associate Director H. L. Gosselin.

Personnel Director Donald E. Leaver said the program has four basic objectives: to raise standards of courtesy; assure that these standards are consistently met; recognize superior employee performance in the area of guest relations; and make health-care consumers aware of the hospital’s emphasis on guest relations.
