PARIS — A New Jersey man accused of trafficking in drugs at last year’s Nateva Festival pleaded not guilty on Thursday.

Joseph P. Zappile, 21, of Sussex, N.J., is accused of trafficking in LSD and ecstacy.

He faces two Class B trafficking charges, each punishable by up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $20,000.

On July 3, officer Holli Pullen of the Norway Police Department approached Zappile at the fair. According to Zappile’s arrest report, Pullen saw him throw a cigarette box on the ground as she approached.

She wrote that she handcuffed him and picked up the box. Zappile told her the box contained MDMA, better known as ecstasy, and LSD, also known as acid. A lab test later confirmed it. The drugs were divided between several one-gram and half-gram baggies totaling six grams, Pullen wrote in the arrest report. She said the MDMA and LSD were packaged for distribution, and that the baggies were “consistent with drug trafficking.”

Zappile was released on a $10,000 bail bond after his arrest.
