AUBURN — Norman W. Worthing Jr., 83, of Auburn, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, following a short illness, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
He was born in Auburn, June 16, 1927, the son of the late Norman W. Worthing Sr. and Maude Bickford. He was educated in Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1945, and attained his civil engineering degree from the University of Maine in Orono in 1950. He was married to Marie Carpentier, who predeceased him in 1981.
Norman served his country with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed for 42 years by the State of Maine Department of Transportation as a civil engineer in their Dixfield office, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of Tranquil Lodge, AF & AM, American Legion Post of Auburn and the VFW Frank W. Hulett Post of Auburn.
Norman was a true friend to all who knew him. He enjoyed skiing, golfing and gardening. His greatest pleasure was the compassion he had for his dogs that shared his life.
He is survived by his long-time companion, Brenda L. Sweetser of Auburn; three sons, Gary Worthing of Dover Foxcroft, Lee Worthing of Auburn and Scott Worthing and wife, Stephanie, of Lewiston; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gloria Brooks of Auburn.
