AUBURN — The Department of Environmental Protection has fined a waste company for taking apart computers and televisions in violation of state regulations.
EWaste Recycling Solutions was fined $27,500 last month and agreed to rectify problems the DEP found at the Bark Mulch Drive plant.
According to an eWaste official, the problems found at the facility posed no threat to the environment; it mostly came down to a matter of paperwork.
“There was never any accusation of environmental damage,” CEO Rick Dumas said. The problems “were all taken care of the day the inspector arrived here.”
In essence, the DEP found that eWaste was breaking down televisions and computers with cathode ray tubes without a license to do so. The DEP has since issued eWaste a license to de-manufacture certain universal and electronic waste.
The company was also cited for offenses that included treating universal waste on site, failing to submit quarterly waste reports and failing to properly mark containers.
According to a DEP press release, eWaste agreed to begin conducting and documenting weekly inspections at the facility.
