“When I heard that report that beer was on draft in so many places in Lewiston, I started out to get some last night,” said a man to The Sun. “I didn’t find any and had to go down to New Auburn to get a drink and it was bottled stuff at that.”

50 years ago, 1961

Fuel oil prices in the Twin Cities have increased or are expected to increase a half-cent a gallon, according to several oil dealers contacted yesterday. Wholesale distributors have notified most local dealers of the price rise. Since mid-December when prices went up one cent, fuel oil has ranged between 16 and 17 cents a gallon with some dealers offering a discount on accounts paid soon after delivery.

25 years ago, 1986

Marking the start of his second term, Lewiston Mayor Alfred A. Plourde called for continued cooperation between elected officials, city employees and private individuals in his inaugural speech Monday night.

But to ensure that city government is doing what it should, Plourde announced he will form a special task force to independently evaluate the city’s public services.

Plourde and members of the City Council for the coming two years were sworn into office by City Clerk Gerald Berube in ceremonies in the Lewiston Junior High School auditorium.
