PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A woman convicted of beating her sleeping husband in the face with a baseball bat and then shooting herself to make the attack look like a home invasion maintained her innocence Friday as she was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Justice Joyce Wheeler imposed the sentence after Linda Dolloff of Standish stuck to her story that an intruder shot her and attacked her husband on April 12, 2009.

The former yoga instructor told the judge that she turned down prosecutors’ plea bargain because she did nothing wrong. “The district attorney offered me three years in prison if I would plead guilty,” Dolloff told the judge. “I cannot do that, as I did not try to kill my husband.”

Dolloff was convicted in May of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and filing a false report.

Prosecutors who sought a 30-year sentence noted that emergency responders didn’t think the victim would survive. Jeffrey Dolloff’s nose and cheek bones were broken, his teeth were knocked out and he had additional skull fractures. After recovering, he no longer has a sense of taste or smell.

Prosecutors contend Dolloff was angry because her husband planned to bring another woman to the home they shared. Linda Dolloff said they were in the process of a divorce but that it was amicable.

Jeffrey Dolloff, who doesn’t remember the attack, was not in the courtroom on Friday.

Linda Dolloff’s attorneys contend there was insufficient evidence to support a conviction and that she didn’t get a fair trial. She’s appealing her conviction.
