AUBURN — Two Bates College students involved in a melee on campus last spring pleaded guilty in court Monday to related misdemeanor charges.
Charles Cary, who was 20 years old at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty Monday to failure to disperse. If he stays out of trouble and complies with conditions of his plea for a year, he will be allowed to withdraw his plea and the charge will be dismissed, according to court records.
Cary, who is from Lincoln, Mass., but lives locally as a student on Frye Street, was in Androscoggin County Superior Court on Monday with his attorney to enter his plea. Cary also must complete 50 hours of community service. A second charge was dismissed.
Also in court was Sarah Ewing, 22, a Bates student at the time of the spring incident.
Ewing, from Washington, Conn., pleaded no contest Monday to a single count of failure to disperse, a Class E. misdemeanor. Two other misdemeanor charges, failure to disperse and refusing to submit to arrest, were dismissed. She was fined $250.
Eleven students were arrested the night of May 26 after roughly 300 students converged on Smith Hall. Campus security was overwhelmed by the incident and called in Lewiston Police Department for assistance. Local police eventually broke up the crowd but a Lewiston officer suffered a broken leg during the incident.
Two other Bates students last spring had been on the January trial list: Kush Mahan, 22, of Kalamazoo, Mich., on charges of disorderly conduct and failure to disperse, and Samuel Guilford, 23, of Surry, on charges of aggravated assault, refusing to submit to arrest, disorderly conduct and failure to disperse.
Several other students involved in the incident have entered pleas on deferred dispositions.
