WEST ROXBURY, Mass. — Edward M. McCarthy, 70, of Wales died peacefully after a long illness on Sunday, Jan. 9, at the VA Hospital.

He was born in Lewiston, Aug. 8, 1940, the son of George T. Sr. and Irene (Chaisson) McCarthy. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving actively from 1962 to 1964. Ed was a Sprinkler Fitter by trade for the Local 550 of Boston, and was a member of the VFW of Sabattus. Ed had a passion for golf teeing it up at all the local courses including, Martindale, Springbrook, Apple Valley and Fairlawn. He also loved collecting, especially coins, stamps, and baseball and football memorabilia. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and his grandchildren.

He is survived by one daughter, Kim Rac and her companion, Jacob Bissonnette, of Poland; three stepdaughters, Sonia Roy and her husband, Jean, Valarie Tardif and Brenda Smith and her companion, Ray Holcomb, all of Lewiston; four sisters, Lorraine Ouellette of Massachusetts, Gloria May of Massachusetts, Irene Chipman of Massachusetts, and Mary Cavis of Sabattus; five grandchildren, Britney and Brendon Rac, Jessica Fortin, Natasha Tardif and Trevor Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, George T. McCarthy Jr. and Richard McCarthy; and two sisters, Patricia Charest and Dorothy Lauzier.
