Wednesday’s storm caused a number of delays, cancellations and the first snow day of the school year in the River Valley and Bethel areas.
SAD 44 Superintendent David Murphy said all classes and after-school activities were canceled, similar to nearby RSU 10, SAD 17 and the Region 9 School of Applied Technology. He said he had hoped that the first snow day would come later. His district builds five snow days into the school year, which allows the last day of school to fall on June 14.
Throughout the day in Mexico, police had heard of few vehicles sliding off local roads, except for those in the more southerly part of Oxford County, said Sgt. Roy Hodsdon. However, he said accidents were expected in the afternoon because of the combination of packed snow and ice.
The Region 9 board, which was scheduled to meet Wednesday night, postponed its monthly meeting to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 13.
Mexico Town Manager John Madigan said the town offices closed at noon to allow employees a chance to get home safely.
In neighboring Rumford, the district court also closed at noon.
