AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage is asking Mainers to reflect on the tragic shooting in Arizona as the nation commemorates the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

In his weekly radio address Saturday, the Republican governor says some people have blamed last weekend’s shooting on “vitriolic political rhetoric.”

But he says the fact of the matter is that no Democrat, Republican, Green or independent politician pulled the trigger, and that people needs to come together to find out why there is so much hostility.

In Saturday’s Democratic radio address, Rep. Emily Cain says the MLK holiday serves as a reminder of how far the nation has come over the years, while the Arizona shooting is a reminder of how far there is to go.
