This is in response to Mark LaFlamme’s column, “Lisbon Street blues,” Jan. 12.

I moved to Lewiston last summer and chose quite intentionally to live on Lisbon Street. Even without decades of memories, it’s not hard to see that there have been some pretty big changes down here, and it’s clear things are still very much in transition as the community looks for new directions.

Walking a couple of blocks in either direction, I pass empty buildings, busy cafes, law offices, vacant lots, social clubs and arts organizations. There is a massive amount of urban infrastructure down here and even though it might not be what it was, is that seriously a reason to mourn, abandon and surrender the downtown?

To me, the most important thing is to think creatively and courageously about this city’s resources and to gain confidence in Lewiston’s ability to remake itself.
