She was born in Lewiston, July 2, 1951, a daughter of the late Laureat and Evangeline (Saucier) Michaud. Joyce attended St. Louis School and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1969. She went on to graduate from the University of Maine — Portland/Gorham, with a degree in teaching.

Joyce married the love of her life, Melville R. Hanson Jr., June 25, 1971. He predeceased her on Nov. 17, 2004. Joyce taught in the Auburn school system for 19 years retiring in 2006. She loved all her students and when asked how many kids she had she would always reply more than 20. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, where she taught CCD for many years.

Joyce was an avid reader and enjoyed many handcrafts such as needlepoint, knitting and sewing. She took great pride in her own three children, being very active in their lives and supporting all their efforts. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family, especially her children and grandchildren.
