RUMFORD — The Rumford Hospital Auxiliary voted at its January meeting to donate $5,000in furnishings to the hospital under the umbrella of the 2010-2011 Annual Appeal.

Auxiliary members had noted that there was no table in the inpatient unit solarium where patients and their families could do puzzles, play games or have a snack. An adjustable height table was the first item approved for purchase. At the suggestion of Therapy Services, the Auxiliary also approved the purchase of a special recliner for the solarium.

Several Auxiliary members also serve as patient visitors and had been told by patients and families that they wished the patient rooms had some artwork. As this year’s hospital budget could not accommodate the purchase, the Auxiliary chose to use the remainder of the gift to buy as many pieces of art as possible for patient rooms.

The Auxiliary does not always choose specific items to purchase with the annual gifts. Many years they simply donate an amount of money and ask the Capital Expenditures Committee to use it as they see fit, along with other Annual Appeal gifts, but this year Auxilians saw distinct needs that might not be addressed in the budget.

“In the past we have been asked to make specific gifts,” said Barbara Belanger, Auxiliary president. “That was the case a couple of years ago with the labor tub for the new birthing center. But this year we didn’t need to be asked; we saw the needs because of our volunteer work in the hospital.”
