It has been recently noted that several churches in the downtown area have, sadly, had to close due to financial strain of older, inefficient buildings and dwindling congregations (Jan. 12).

Calvary United Methodist Church, located downtown at 59 Sabattus St., is still open and providing spiritual support for body and soul. As a congregation, it was decided about five years ago to stay alive and well, right where the church was planted in inner-city Lewiston.

The music ministry has been updated, Sunday school classes for adults and children are alive and well, and consistent child care is provided for Sunday service. Mission abounds, including church members with other community friends preparing and serving a free breakfast every Sunday morning and a free dinner each Wednesday. These meals are blessed with an atmosphere of community and friendship.

In addition, among other programs, there is a very active and productive women’s association and a weekly study group that engages in a varied menu of studies and discussions concerning issues of faith.

If anyone is missing the convenience and sense of community that comes from worshipping in a church that is within walking distance, and has a heart for the people right here in Lewiston and Auburn, come and visit. Your faith tradition or denomination does not make a difference. The message is relevant for everyone.

Calvary church is in the process of adding more programs and services and would love to have you there to share the journey.
