AUBURN — James Frederick Gaylord Jr. devoted husband, father and grandfather, died on Saturday, Jan. 8.

He was born on June 15, 1926, in Springfield, Mass., the son of James F. Gaylord, M.D., and Helen Jones Gaylord. Following high school, Jim served from 1944 to 1946 in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Theater. He married Nancy Cleveland Walton after his freshman year at Dartmouth College, where he graduated Cum Laude with honors in 1950. Combining his last year of college with the first year of graduate school, he graduated with highest distinction with an MBA from Amos Tuck School, Dartmouth College in 1951.

He worked for 24 years for the Scott Paper Co., last in the role of staff vice president for Industrial Relation Services. He then joined and served the Federal Reserve System for 16 years. When he retired, he was executive vice president of the Federal Reserve of Philadelphia with responsibilities for cash management and bank services, as well as human resources.

He and his wife, Nan, then divided their time between China in Maine, Gulf Shores, Ala., and Wallingford/Swarthmore, Pa. He chose to spend as much time as possible with his children and eight grandchildren. In addition to photography, woodworking and gardening, Jim loved to watch his grandchildren’s sporting events and to take them on trips to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park. He and Nan also traveled extensively including trips to New Zealand, Australia, Africa, Thailand and Alaska. Most recently, Jim and Nan lived in Auburn, where he met and enjoyed new friends and neighbors. He was a member of the High Street Congregational Church in Auburn and volunteered in their food pantry.

Jim is survived by his wife, Nan; their four children, daughter, Barrie Forbes and her husband, Scott, daughter, Susan Walton Gaylord, M.D., son, James F. Gaylord III and his wife, Vickie and daughter, Nancy Merk and her husband, David; his grandchildren, Juliette Forbes, Stephanie Forbes, Alison Forbes, Charlotte Gaylord, Elizabeth Gaylord, James F. Gaylord IV and his wife, Laura, Kristen Gaylord and Ashley Gaylord.
