WATERFORD — There will be no contests on the March 4 annual town election.
Town Clerk Brenda Bigonski said the deadline for submitting nomination papers for the annual town election was this week and only three people returned papers for the three open positions.
Polls are open at the municipal building from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 4.
According to Bigonski, incumbent Selectman Randy Lessard has submitted papers for re-election to that post which also includes duties as assessor.
Road Commissioner Brad Grover is seeking re-election to his post.
Oxford Hills School District Board of Director William Colbath is not seeking re-election but Barry Patrie has taken out papers for the post.
Bigonski, who has worked for the town for nearly three decades, is completing the third year of a three-year elected position, but after March 4, she will be an appointed town clerk.
Last year, the majority of annual town meeting voters agreed to make the town clerk’s position an appointed rather than elected position to be in line with most area towns. The town clerk will now answer to the Board of Selectmen as an appointed position after the annual town election.
“This is a new thing for everybody,” said Bigonski, who is paid a $16.22 hourly wage.
Although Bigonski said she had intended to retire at the time the vote was taken last year, she has since decided to stay on in the position full time.
“At the time I was going to get done. If I had known, I would rather be elected,” she said of her later decision to stay on full time after the March 4 election.
Bigonski said she will stay on full-time for an indefinite time.
The annual town meeting gets under way the following day at 9 a.m. on March 5 at the municipal building.
