PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The Maine Turnpike Authority is ordering drivers to slow down as the latest winter storm arrives during the morning commute.

More than 200 schools and businesses are closed as the forecast calls for six to 10 inches across most of southern Maine. Margaret Curtis of the National Weather Service says the heaviest snowfall is forecast along the coast. Lesser accumulations are forecast to the north.

It seems like Maine is getting pounded by snow lately, but Curtis says Portland was running around average for the season before the latest snowstorm.

And the snow will be followed by the deep freeze. Over the weekend, parts of Maine could see temperatures near 25 degrees below zero.
