AUBURN — Cam Kaubris sank two free throws to send the game into overtime and unbeaten Mountain Valley pulled away by hitting their free throws late in overtime to escape with a 65-58 victory over St. Dom’s.
The Falcons (12-0) appeared to have a comfortable 46-31 lead entering the final stanza, but the Saints (3-9) stormed back behind the perimeter shooting of Joe Bryant. to take a 53-51 lead with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Kaubris, who finished with 19 points, sank two foul shots with 20 seconds left to tie the game.
The Falcons scored nine of the final 11 points in overtime for the win.
Jacob Theriault added 15 points and Izaak Mills added 11 for the Falcons. Tom Applegate finished with a career-high 19 points for the Saints, while Bryant scored 16 points, including five 3-pointers.
Rangeley 51, Islesboro 48
RANGELEY — Alex Morton scored 10 of his 17 points and hit a key pair of free-throws in the fourth quarter as Rangeley slipped away from Islesboro with a 51-48 victory in a boys’ basketball game Saturday.
There were other fourth-quarter heroics for the Lakers (7-4) when Jordan Richard hit a key 3-pointer to go along with his 14 points. Regan Sargent stood out on defense, collecting four steals and Zeke Hall scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
For Islesboro, D.J. Johnson was the whole ball of wax when he scored 25 points and made good on five 3-pointers, while teammate Jason hatch dropped in 12 points.
The Lakers led at the half, 25-19 before Islesboro erupted with 22 points in the third quarter.
Gray-NG 77, Freeport 53
GRAY — Senior forward Aaron Jensen had a stellar performance with a game-high 29 points as Gray-New Gloucester dumped Freeport 77-53 in WMC boys’ basketball action Saturday.
The Patriots (7-4) applied most of their offensive pressure in the second and third quarters, earning 45 of their 77 points in the middle two frames. Josh Farynaz contributed 19 points, while Heath Martell added 10 points.
Nick Bennett converted several amazing turnover steals into layups for Gray-New Gloucester.
Josh Weirich led three players in double digits with 13 points for the Falcons (0-12).
Edward Little 67, Brunswick 36
AUBURN —Bo Leary scored 17 points, hauled down 12 rebounds and dished out four assists to lead Edward Little to a 67-36 triumph over Brunswick.
The Dragons (6-6) scratched out a 12-11 lead after the first quarter, but Edward Little (11-1), sparked by a pair of 3-pointers by Cody Nicholas, used a 20-4 spurt to take command with a 31-16 advanttage.
Quin Leary chipped in with 15 points, while Nicholas and Tim Mains each hit three 3-pointers for nine pounts.
Brad Smith led Brunswick with 12 points.
Medomak Valley 55, Leavitt 46
TURNER — Sophomore center John Murray posted a team-high 14 points as Medomak Valley clawed its way to a 55-46 second half come-from-behind win over Leavitt in KVAC boys’ basketball action Saturday.
The Hornets (10-2) took 34-21 lead at halfime. Senior guard Kyle Smith tossed a game-high 18 points, while Lucas Witham recorded 16 points.
The Panthers (9-3) regrouped in the second half and outscored Leavitt 34-12 in the frame. Isaac Greenhouse chipped in with 12 points in the losing effort.
Gould 38, NYA 36
BETHEL — Senior forward Taylor Peck-Moad recorded a team-high 12 points to lead Gould to a 38-36 triumph over North Yarmouth Academy in boys’ basketball action Saturday.
The Huskies (5-4) were bouyed by a pair of late-game free throws from Nate Brown and Shaq Jones. Abe Bartlett scored a modest four points, but hauled down 12 rebounds for Gould.
Senior center Nick Escancy tossed six field goals for a team-high 12 points for the Panthers (4-8). Senior guard Al Dahia chipped in with 11 points in the losing effort.
Hockey
Edward Little 6, Mt. Ararat 4
AUBURN — Cody Russell scored a hat trick, including a pair of third-period goals, to lift Edward Little to a 6-4 come-from-behind win over Mt. Ararat in boys’ hockey action Saturday at Ingersoll Arena.
The Eagles (4-5-2) had a two-goal lead in the second, but relinquished one before the close of the frame. Senior forward Neal Burgess posted a hat trick for Mt. Ararat.
The Red Eddies (6-5) netted three unanswered goals in the third period. Dylan Nadeau scored the first to tie the contest at 4-4, his second of the game, and Russell notched a pair down the stretch to cement the win for Edward Little.
