LEWISTON — Lena Davis Sherman, a resident of Pond Road, Wales, died Thursday, Jan. 20, at Marshwood Healthcare Center at the age of 97.

She was born on Dec. 13, 1913, in Wales, daughter of Clarence and Maude (Greenwood) Davis. She attended school in Wales and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1932.

After graduating from Bliss Business School, she was employed as a secretary at Pownal State School. For 47 years, she held the office of Wales Town Treasurer.

On June 15, 1938, she married Charles A. S. Sherman. They lived in Wales and operated a dairy farm on the Pond Road for many years.

Lena was an 83-year member of Wales Grange No. 40, where she was past master and currently treasurer. She was a member of Androscoggin Pomona Grange, Maine State Grange and National Grange. She attended Wales Presbyterian Church and was active in Farm Bureau Extension.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Hodgkin and her husband, Douglas, of Lewiston; a son, Wayne Sherman and his wife, Linda, of Wales; five grandchildren, Hilarie Morris and friend William Baker, Ryan Sherman and his wife, Jennifer, Andrew Hodgkin and his wife, RaeAnn, Deanna Mao and her husband, Jeff, and Valerie Trantanella and her husband, Charles; two great-granddaughters and four great-grandsons; and many special nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1987; a sister, Louise Webster; and a brother, Fred Davis.
