I was pleased to see the editorial from the Sun Journal (Jan. 20) calling for a balanced approach to protecting fragile natural resources, such as vernal pools, with smart growth and thoughtful economic development.

For decades. the Stanton Bird Club has protected several vernal pools within Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary in Lewiston. These pools are regularly monitored to measure the quality of the amphibian populations and the stability of the surrounding habitats.

Thorncrag is an ideal place to learn about the ecology of vernal pools and the role they play in a healthy environment for all species of wildlife and forests in Maine.
