GORHAM — Senior guard Kaylie DeMillo of Jay knocked down a 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to break a tie ball game and deliver the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 72-69 win over the Keene State College Owls in a Little East Conference women’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
The win is the eighth straight for the Huskies, who improve to 13-6 overall and 8-1 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine snapped Keene State’s four-game winning streak and the loss drops the Owls’ record to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
DeMillo’s clutch 3-pointer was her third of the game as the 5-7 guard finished the game with 13 points, four rebounds and five assists. Junior guard Nicole Garland and junior forward Courtney Cochran each scored 18 points for the Huskies. Garland was lights out from three-point range, knocking down 5-of-7 from beyond the arc en route to her career-high total. Cochran helped USM control the paint on a 7-for-14 effort from the field, while snagging a game-high 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.
Bates 86, Connecticut 59
LEWISTON — Sharp-shooting sophomore Allie Beaulieu scored 23 points and senior Jessie Igoe added 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots as the Bates College women’s basketball team routed Connecticut College 86-59 in a NESCAC game Saturday at Alumni Gym.
Bates rose to 16-5 overall, 4-2 in NESCAC play with its third straight win.
Senior Tori Verrengia led the Camels (7-13, 0-6 NESCAC) with 21 points, including five three-pointers, to go with four assists.
Beaulieu made 9-of-12 shots, including 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. She also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the game. Igoe notched her second double-double of the season and the fourth of her career in her final regular-season home game. Fellow senior captain Christine McCall (Lowell, Mass.) contributed nine points and three steals.
Husson 72, UMF 62
FARMINGTON — Husson University strolled out to a 15-point first-half lead and held on to take a 72-62 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action this afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Beavers (7-9 overall, 4-3 NAC) are scheduled to host Maine Maritime Academy Monday at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game. The Eagles (7-10, 5-1) are tabbed to take on Thomas College in Waterville Monday at 5:30 p.m.
Jillian Ross scored 17 points, including a 10-for-10 effort from the foul line, and grabbed eight rebounds for the Beavers, while Ashley Busque and Kenni Norton added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Holly Oliver turned in eight points and 10 rebounds in defeat, while Paige Saunders (Surry, Maine) blocked five shots.
The Beavers shot 27.7 percent (18-65) from the field, including 27.3 (6-22) from 3-point range, compared the Eagles 36.1 (26-72). Farmington made 20 of 25 free attempts (80.0), while Husson hit 11 of 15 freebies (73.3)
Men’s basketball
Bates 58, Connecticut 47
LEWISTON — The Bates College men’s basketball team won its third straight NESCAC game on Saturday, beating Connecticut College 58-47 in the Bobcats’ final regular-season home game of the season.
Bates (12-9, 3-3 NESCAC) outscored Connecticut College 31-18 in the second half after the Camels (10-10, 1-5 NESCAC), the second time in as many days and the third straight time overall that the Bobcats have put together a big second half to win.
Senior Nick Schmiemann scored a team-high 13 points in his final home game. Senior Brian Ellis and junior John Squires added 12 apiece. Also playing their last home games, seniors Alex Gallant and Thomas Deegan scored eight and two points, respectively.
First-year guard Matt Vadas led Connecticut College with a game-high 23 points, but was the only Camel to score more than six points.
Men’s basketball
Husson 86, UMF 76
FARMINGTON — Jay Uhrin tallied a career-high 29 points as Husson University notched an 86-76 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in North Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action this afternoon at Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Beavers (6-11 overall, 2-5 in NAC) are scheduled to host Maine Maritime Academy Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles (12-4) remained undefeated in NAC play at 6-0 with a trip to Waterville to face Thomas College Monday.
Eric Taylor scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the loss, while Pet Sumner contributed 21 points off the bench, including four 3-pointers. Ben Johnson added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Beavers, with Andrew Dean chipping in nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Josh Jones tallied 22 points and yanked down nine rebounds for Husson. Jones netted 14 points in the first 10 minutes of the contest, while Uhrin scored 18 points in the second half to help Husson close out the win.
YARMOUTH — Senior forward center Sara Marden scored a half dozen goals as Lewiston cruised to an 8-5 victory over Yarmouth in girls’ hockey action Saturday.
Emily Turner notched her first goal of the season for the Blue Devils in the matchup.
Courtney Barker put the Clippers on the board first with an unassisted goal at the 8:37 mark of the first period.
Goalie Gage Thurston made 11 saves for Yarmouth, while Sarah Turner prevented 21 shots to earn the win in net for Lewiston.
St. Dom’s 3, Winslow 1
LEWISTON — Marissa Zamrock and Sophie Goulet scored a goal and an assist each to lift St. Dom’s to a 3-1 victory over Winslow in girls’ ice hockey action Saturday.
Jen Hitin put the Raiders on the board first with a goal 3:06 into the contest. Anna Desjardins tied the game just over three minutes later for the Saints.
Neither team managed to net another goal until Goulet converted a power-play tally at 3:24 of the third period. Zamrock notched an insurance goal on another power play tally at 10:02 to round out the scoring.
Leavitt/EL 6, Greely 5
AUBURN — Landry Taylor scored five straight goals and Shelby Russell added another as Leavitt/Edward Little slipped away from Greely with a 6-5 victory in a girls’ hockey game Saturday night.
The Red Hornets (8-6-1) took a commanding 6-1 lead after two periods, but the Rangers (9-5-1) rallied and scored five goals in the final stanza.
Boys’ hockey
Hebron 6, Brewster 3
HEBRON — Six different players scored for Hebron as the Lumberjacks grabbed a comfortable 6-3 win over Brewster in boys’ hockey Saturday.
Adam Devine put the Lumberjacks on the board first in the opening period, while Lou Caraglia and Andrew Graham pushed Hebron’s lead to 3-0 in the second period before Brewster got on the board.
Goalie Josh Hickey made 30 saves for Brewster, while Guillaume Belanger Therien earned the win in net with 28 saves for Hebron.
Boys’ basketball
Elan 58, AR Gould 52
SOUTH PORTLAND — Jock Peters scored 23 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, picked off seven steals and blocked five shots as Elan (14-1) shook off AR Gould with a 58-52 victory in a boys’ basketball game Saturday.
Elan led for the entire game even though AR Gould erupted with 16 points in the final quarter.
Malik Nunn scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds for Elan.
AR Gould’s Steve Lyons scored 23 points and hit four 3-pointers. George Hopkins and Mek Nigussie each scored 10 points.
Girls’ basketball
NYA 41, Hebron 30
HEBRON — Morgan Scully scored a team-leading 15 points as North Yarmouth Academy secured a 41-30 victory over Hebron in girls’ basketball action Saturday.
The Panthers took a 24-15 lead at the half. Eliza Gendron contributed 10 points in a balanced attack for North Yarmouth Academy.
Janelle Bradish scored a game-high 18 points, 12 rebounds, 13 blocks and five steals for the Lumberjacks.
