This is in reference to Tom Saviello’s bill to deny MaineCare benefits to smokers.
It is time we get honest and take a good look at the problem of addiction in the state of Maine and nationally. I know of no one who looks forward to stepping out into minus-10-degree weather to smoke a cigarette while getting looks from passers-by that we are a lower form of life. Most of us have tried to quit many times, to no avail. It is a powerful addiction.
In a recent study, it was estimated that 30 to 50 percent of all hospital admissions are due to alcohol-related problems. Obesity-related illnesses and hospitalization have increased tremendously during the past 10 years. Addiction to pharmaceutical drugs has become epidemic, particularly in Maine.
We need to acknowledge that all addictions have created major social, health and financial problems for our state. Adding increased taxes on cigarettes will not solve the problem, nor will adding taxes to Budweiser and Twinkies, or denying health care to anyone.
I do not know the answers to this serious issue. Perhaps more education for all, and help for those who suffer from addiction.
I do know that acknowledging there is a problem is the first step.
