NORWAY — Stone-Smart American Legion Auxiliary 82 met on Jan. 26 at the post with President Joyce Clifford presiding.
Ellen Snow reported that she has donated items to Community Services of Oxford County, the Norway Recreation Department, Responsible Pet Care and Families of the National Guard.
Kim Hansen reported on the Christmas Gift Shop, where members of the unit wrapped gifts and helped residents shop for their family members. More than 200 family members were served.
Marjy Sessions reported that due to a snowstorm and personal family matter, the unit had to cancel its involvement in the January birthday party at the Veterans Home. The party went on with staff and other volunteers. The presents, cards and ice cream were furnished by the unit.
Barbara Henley reported that she and Clifford went to the Guy E. Rowe School during Education Week. They presented pencils and two books the teachers had requested. The teachers were also remembered and thanked for all they do for the children. A basket of snacks was left in the teachers’ room.
Chaplain Christine Weiss reported that she has taken more than 90 cards to the Veterans Home and mailed several to shut-ins.
Henley, Americanism and education chairwoman, spoke on the “Need A Lift” program, which is a book of scholarships for seniors going on to college. Some scholarships are never given out, as no one applies.
Henley made a notebook, which is at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School guidance office. She also made two posters, one at the high school library and one at Norway Memorial Library, that provide the Web site address.
Henley initiated saving Campbell soup labels and box tops for education that will benefit the Rowe School.
As an Americanism programs, second-graders at Rowe School wrote letters to soldiers overseas. Henley received 46 and they were sent to the soldiers. She will visit the second-graders on Presidents Day, read them a story and they will color a picture.
Henley will teach Girl Scouts the proper handling of the American flag.
The unit voted to give three awards to Norway senior girls: the Stone-Smart Award, the Marion Millett-Stone-Smart Award and the Myra Stevens Award.
Members give a donation in Mary Tolman’s memory to the community lunch program. The charter was draped in Tolman’s memory, with a service by Clifford and Weiss, and Rose Moulton draping the charter.
The meeting was preceded by a chili and chicken soup supper with sandwiches, cornbread and muffins. Henley was supper chairwoman and Moulton helped serve. Desserts were made by Beulah Ayer, Thelma Denlinger and Clifford.
