DOVER-FOXCROFT — Robert M. Bunker, 88, passed away Jan. 29, surrounded by his family at Mayo Regional Hospital.
He was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Milo, the son of Fred and Margaret (Skiffington) Bunker. Robert graduated from Milo High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the China/Burma/India Campaign.
Upon his return home, he married Marian Edna Littlefield. They were happily married for 50 years, until her death in 1995. His career was that of a civil service administrator for Army reserve units, including those in Bangor, Scarborough, Farmington, Rangeley, Bridgton, Livermore Falls and Auburn.
He retired in 1983 with 42 years of proud service. He also served as an Army reservist, rising through the enlisted ranks to sergeant major, then accepting a commission as chief warrant office three. He also served a tour as a Navy reserve chief aboard the USS Tills, out of Portland Harbor.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4917 and past post commander of the American Legion Post. He was a 50-year member of the Odd Fellows. He and his wife, Edna, were longtime members and trustees of Sebec Village Community Christian Church. He was a longtime member of Milo Fire Department and served as chief from 1950 to 1953.
To family and friends he was known as the last surviving patriarch of the Bunkers of his generation. For the family, he was a devoted husband, loving father, patriot of high work ethics and an example for generations to come. His many friends knew him as thoughtful, kind, well spoken, sincere and spiritual. He felt so fortunate to have many dear friends in his life.
He is survived by his son, Stephan Bunker and his wife, Cheryl, of Farmington; son, Michael Bunker and his wife, Theresa, of Vero Beach, Fla.; daughter, Stephanie Bunker of Dover-Foxcroft; granddaughter, Cynthia (Bunker) Chisholm and her husband, Keith; great-granddaughters, Katie and Emily Chisholm; and grandson, Robert M. Bunker, all of Vero Beach, Fla.
