LEWISTON — Edward D. “Snookie” Mercier, 76, of Franklin Street, Rumford, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 5, at Central Maine Medical Center.

He was born in Rumford, May 3, 1934, a son of Roland and Laura (Meehan) Mercier.

Snookie was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School, Class of 1952. He served as a chaplin’s assistant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Snookie was employed for 41 years with the Rumford Paper Mill. He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior and was a member of the VFW and the Webb River Sportsman’s Association.

Snookie loved spending time in the woods, walking up the mountain with his chocolate Lab Scout, picking berries on his 4-wheeler and hunting. He also looked forward to going fishing at his camp at Garland Pond. A favorite past time was working in his cellar with moose and deer antlers, and his daily happy-hour with family and friends.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Patricia (Cote) Mercier of Rumford; four children, Laura Reed and husband, Daniel, of Rumford, Wayne Mercier and wife, Nancy, of Rumford, Lynn Root and husband, Preston, of Flagler Beach, Fla., and Janet Mercier of Rumford; eight grandchildren, Brian and wife, Grainne, Erin, Cerese, Sandra, Myles, Scenic, Nicole and Jamie; one great-grandson, Jacob; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Scout.

He was predeceased by his parents; his stepmother, Mary E. Mercier; and four sisters, Joan, Kathleen, Mildred and Rosemarie.
