Madeline lives at home alone. She has raised four children, who have all moved away. She is gets around quite well, except her eyesight is failing. She is unable to drive. With the help of the Elder Rides program, she is able to get to her medical appointments. Friends help her get to the grocery store, but she doesn’t want to burden them by asking to take her to medical appointments. Community Concepts Elder Rides volunteers help her remain independent and in her own home.

Community Concepts Elder Rides program utilizes 375+ volunteer drivers that provide transportation services to seniors and veterans to critical and preventative medical services. Transportation to critical care includes: kidney dialysis, chemotherapy and radiation. Preventative services include: check ups, chronic care maintenance, flu shots, and prescription pick-up. CCI is the only agency in the State of Maine that offers this service to this particular population in the community.

Seniors and veterans are the largest “at risk” population in the State of Maine. Access to medical and health services is essential to maintaining independence. There is only one major veteran’s hospital in Maine and two additional clinics that cover Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. Transportation is not only a critical link to essential medical care, but it is a key factor contributing to the independence and well-being of rural seniors and veterans.

Elder Rides needs your help. There is no funding for this program. Elder Rides runs strictly on the generosity of individuals, as well as corporate and foundation grants. Times are tough and tough choices need to be made. Please donate to this program and help people in your own community that truly need it.
