AUGUSTA — Maine has new commissioners of the state departments of human services and agriculture.

The state Senate on Tuesday confirmed Gov. Paul LePage’s nominations of Mary Mayhew to head the Department of Health and Human Services, which administers social service programs serving roughly a quarter of the state’s population. Only eight of the 34 senators voting opposed her appointment, far less than the two-thirds majority needed to overturn the committee recommendation supporting Mayhew. She is a former Maine Hospital Association executive who also served briefly as LePage’s health policy adviser.

Senators voted unanimously to confirm Waldo dairy farmer Walter Whitcomb as commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources.

Gov. Paul LePage administered the oath of office to both of them after their confirmations.
