LEWISTON — The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society will participate in Spay Day USA, a national campaign for the Humane Society of the United States, to promote the benefits of spay/neuter, when Dr. Stephen Kinney will host his fourth Spay Day USA low-cost feline spay/neuter event at the humane society on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

“Spay/neuter protects pet health, improves pet behavior and lessens the burden on animal shelters and taxpayers,” said Kinney. “We are inviting our low-income pet owners who’s cats and kittens are in need of spaying or neutering to contact the shelter for more information and to learn if they qualify for the program at 783-2311.”

This year marks the 16th annual Spay Day, and the shelter staff invite the community to stop by and join them in honoring Spay Day 2011 with refreshments and prizes, including one free cat spay and one free cat neuter.

Since Spay Day’s inception in 1995, participants have altered an estimated 1,518,000 animals. The number of homeless animals euthanized in the U.S. has fallen from approximately 13.5 million in 1973 to about 4 million currently.

The shelter is located at 55 Strawberry Ave. For more information on Spay Day USA or other spay/neuter programs available through the humane society, call the shelter at 783-2311, visit www.gahumane.org or www.facebook/GAHumane.
