LEEDS — Spectrum Generations Family Caregiver Support Program will provide Maine Savvy Caregiver trainings in Richmond and Leeds.
The Russell Medical Center in Leeds will host a training beginning Thursday, Feb. 17, and the second training will be hosted by the Richmond Senior Center beginning Monday, March 21. Both trainings will run from 10 a.m. to noon six consecutive weeks.
Savvy Caregiver is a 12-hour training program for family caregivers of people with dementia disorders like Alzheimer’s disease. The trainings are sponsored by the Office of Elder Services, Department of Health and Human Services, and funded by a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging.
Participants will learn skills for dealing with losses that the disease produces in the person, as well as skills on how to take care of oneself as a caregiver. Sessions include training, interactive exercises and discussion.
Between sessions, caregivers have readings, exercises and assignments to complete and report back to the group on the home activities. Feedback will be provided and strategies developed to support successful caregiving.
