NEW CASTLE, N.H. — A man is planning a winter swim in the Atlantic Ocean to raise money to help preserve lighthouses in Maine and New Hampshire.

“Creek Man” Gary Sredzienski says the lighthouses are the real jewels of the area. He says that to him, they’re living, breathing members of the community.

On Feb. 26, Sredzienski will leave from Odiorne Point in Rye, continue to Whaleback Light in Kittery, then to Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, and end at the Kittery Town Dock in Kittery Point. Once back on shore, Sredzienski and his band, The Serfs, will play at a party at Captain and Patty’s restaurant.

To prepare, Sredzienski swims three miles, four to five times a week.

The Portsmouth Herald says Sredzienski hopes to raise $10,000.
