Supermarket and pharmacy owners in the Lewiston-Auburn area were divided Tuesday on whether to remove Extra-Strength Tylenol from their shelves after the death Saturday of a New York woman who took two cyanide-poisoned capsules.

Officials at three supermarket chains voluntarily ordered their Maine stores Tuesday to remove the capsules from the shelves. The pain-relief pills were withdrawn from displays at stores owned by Shaw’s Supermarkets Inc., Hannaford Bros. Inc. and A&P. None of the chains, nor any of the stores contacted in Lewiston-Auburn, reported finding capsules from the suspect lot.
