Still No. 1

With a pair of goals this week, despite a pair of Lewiston losses, forward Etienne Brodeur continues to lead the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in goal-scoring with 43. Brodeur is also on pace to set a new franchise record for shorthanded goals in a season, a category in which he also leads the league. he registered his ninth short-handed tally of the season Friday, tying him with Stefano Giliati on the single-season list.

Stats watch

Despite an end to his point-scoring streak, Cole Hawes remains atop the league’s list of players with top shooting percentages. When he shoots, he usually makes it count. Hawes has nine goals this season on 32 shots, a 28.1 percent efficiency rate.

In the plus-minus department, Sam Finn continues to hover among the league leaders. At plus-40, Finn is in third place behind Jonathan Huberdeau of Saint John (+47) and Alex Wall of Quebec (+41).

Quite the disparity

One of the statistical categories more dubious in nature is that of total penalty minutes, a category with which the Maineiacs are quite familiar. In 55 games this season (through Friday night’s contest), Lewiston has accumulated 984 minutes in penalties for an average of 17.83 per game.

On the other side this weekend was Quebec. Ranked 18th out of 18 teams in the QMJHL this season, the Remparts have just 545 total minutes in 54 games, an average of just 10.28 minutes per game.

Powerless

The Lewiston Maineiacs’ power play continues to plummet in efficiency, even as the team continues to battle for playoff position. In the team’s 10 previous games, the power play has produced just three goals on 49 opportunities while falling to 15th in the league (16.7 percent).

By contrast, the Maineiacs have scored six shorthanded goals in that same time frame, and they lead the league with 14 shorthanded markers this season in 55 games played.
