LEWISTON — The Associated Press Sports Editors began announcing their annual awards this week.

Tuesday, the APSE announced that the Sun Journal achieved Top-10 status in 2010 for sports sections nationwide with a daily circulation of less than 30,000. It was the second Top 10 award the Sun Journal has earned from APSE, the first since 2007.

The organization also announced Tuesday that Sun Journal sports writer Kalle Oakes has been awarded Top-10 status for column-writing in the under-30,000 category. For column-writing, Oakes was required to submit five writing samples of columns written in 2010. His exact standing within the top 10 will be determined in April.

Annual APSE contest judging concludes Wednesday in Indianapolis.
