FARMINGTON — Bertha T. Bean, late of Farmington, passed away Feb. 14, after a brief illness.

She was born on June 27, 1919, in Chester, N.H., the daughter of Ethel May (Moore) and Louis Martin Butterfield. Bertha spent her childhood years in Raymond, N.H., and Kittery. She graduated from Traip Academy and after graduating business college, worked during World War II as supervisor in the drafting department at Kittery Naval Shipyard.

On Sept. 10, 1944, she married the love of her life, Merit W. Bean. After Merit’s graduation from the University of N.H., they settled in his hometown of Errol, N.H., where she resided for 52 years and raised their four children.

A loving wife, devoted mother and superb homemaker, Bertha enjoyed summers at their vacation home on Long Island in Maine, as well as skiing at Bald Mountain and Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley. In support of her husband’s passion for flying, she received her Pinch Hitter certification from the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association. Throughout her marriage, she and Merit enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada. One of the highlights of her later years was her trip to Italy and Austria with her daughter, Juanita (Chummy) and son, Merit Jr. (Buzz) at the age of 84. She was an avid antique collector and spent many memorable hours at antique auctions throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Peter Royce of Barrington, N.H.; her daughter, Juanita (Chummy) Bean and son-in-law, Bradford Smith, of Farmington; her son, Merit (Buzz) W. Bean Jr and daughter-in-law, Sally Bean, of Madrid; and her grandchildren, Tonya Bean of Yorkville, Ill., Jonathon Royce of Nashua, N.H., Brian Royce of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Tucker Smith of Seattle, Wash.

She was predeceased by her husband, Merit; her son, Laury A. Bean; and daughter, Nona A. Royce.
