AUBURN — A Jay woman who left her dog tied to a tree near the boat launch last fall was ordered this week to pay a fine and restitution.

Julia Griffin, 40, was fined $500 and ordered to pay the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society $120 for the care of the Yorkshire terrier she abandoned.

A man having lunch at the boat launch on Sept. 28 discovered the dog tied up in the woods with a handwritten sign nearby. The sign explained that the dog’s name was Goldy and that she was good with children.

The terrier was suffering from flea bites, an allergy and other problems when it was abandoned, according to the people who took care of her at the shelter.

The dog was adopted days later by a couple in Lisbon. Meanwhile, Animal Control Officer Wendell Strout, acting on leads generated by news stories about the abandoned dog, tracked down Griffin and charged her with abandoning the animal.

After Griffin appeared in court this week, Strout said he was satisfied with the outcome.

“The State Of Maine has cruelty laws that are right up there with the toughest of them,” he said. “Those laws did what they’re supposed to do. Hopefully, this will discourage others from doing the same kind of thing.”
