Willard Sawyer of Wilton, who played baseball last season with the Pilgrims of this city and who has been signed by the Boston Americans, was in Lewiston yesterday, the guest of Manager O’connell of the Pilgrims. He left in the afternoon for Boston, joining Bill Carrigan who left in the morning. The Red Sox squad will start this morning on its spring training trip.
50 years ago, 1961
Lewiston Fire Chief Roland G. Dumais last night termed enforcement of the city’s building code “deplorable,” and he urged immediate steps to hire a full-time building inspector.
Dumais told the Lewiston Zoning board the present city code is good, although it might need some revision; but he stressed the need for enforcement.
The Zoning Board is studying the possibility of revising the city’s building code, and has asked the fire chief and others directly concerned with building structures and safety to participate.
25 years ago, 1986
The wail of bagpipes will sound in Lewiston when the Northern Border Caledonia Pipe Band brings its blend of Scottish music and dance to Bates College on March 1.
The East Holden-based band includes 18 members in traditional costumes who will present bagpipe and drum music, Highland dancing and Gaelic singing. Members of the group come from throughout Central Maine.
