LEWISTON — Androscoggin Dance will present “A Magical Performance,” featuring two ballets, on Saturday, March 5, at the Franco-American Heritage Center.
“La Boutique Fantasque” is a classical ballet about a doll shop that comes to life. “The Magic Painting” is a contemporary ballet about two young artists who are beckoned into the ballet, and their struggle to return to the artist studio.
The one-act classical ballet “La Boutique Fantasque,” conceived by Leonide Massine, a Russian choreographer and ballet dancer, premiered in London in 1919.
Building upon the original story line and themes, Androscoggin Dance Company Artistic Director Elizabeth Hansen choreographed the performance to include a mix of classical ballet and character dancing such as the cancan, mazurka and cossack.
“La Boutique Fantasque,” also known as “The Magic Doll Shop,” tells a story for children, but also presents moral issues that teens and adults can relate to.
“The Magic Painting,” a new work choreographed by Amelia Pullen, tells a story of good versus evil and takes the audience into an imaginary world of jewel-toned colors, strong movement and design.
Performances will be at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children 12 and younger. Call L/A Arts at 782-7228 or visit www.androscoggindance.org.
Dancing the cancan in Androscoggin Dance’s performance of “La Boutique Fantasque” are, from left, Melina Plummer, Jacob Spellman, Heather Baxter, Laura Hansen, Kiah Baxter, Mariah Perry, Sara Spellman, Lacey Moyse, and Neil James.
