PORTLAND — Stanley Taylor Bennett II, who built Oakhurst Dairy into the largest independent dairy in Maine, has died of pancreatic cancer. He was 64.

Bennett died Wednesday in Scarborough. His death was confirmed by Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home.

Born in 1947, Bennett joined a family business founded by his grandfather, soon after graduating from Tufts University. He became president in 1983 and chairman after his father died in 1999. The business now employs about 230 people and distributes milk across Maine, New Hampshire and parts of Vermont and Massachusetts.

Bennett was well-known for his involvement and contributions to community organizations.

He is survived by three children, his former wife and six brothers and sisters. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday.
