WISCASSET, Maine — A Maine State Police trooper was indicted in February on 13 charges involving a girl under the age of 14.

Gregory Vrooman, 45, of Nobleboro is accused of assaulting and sexually touching a girl under the age of 14 and then trying to cover up the crimes.

The Lincoln County grand jury indicted Vrooman on four charges of unlawful sexual touching, four charges of unlawful sexual contact, four charges of assault and one charge of tampering with a witness.

The 24-year veteran of the state police was arrested in November 2010 at his home and later released on bail.

The alleged incidents span from December 2009 to November 2010. Details about the events were not available in Lincoln County Superior Court files.

In a court motion, Vrooman’s attorney wrote that the only witness to the alleged crimes was the girl involved and that her story has not been consistent.

“This is a case without any physical evidence, eyewitness testimony or other corroborating evidence,” he wrote. “As the only single witness to the alleged offenses, questions regarding the alleged victim’s competency and reliability may arise.”

Tampering with a witness and unlawful sexual contact are Class C crimes punishable by up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine on each count; assault and unlawful sexual touching are Class D crimes, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine on each count.

Vrooman is on administrative leave without pay from the Maine State Police.
