LEWISTON — Georgette G. Proulx, 87, of Lewiston died Tuesday, March 1, at Russell Park Rehabilitation & Living Center.
She was born in Lewiston, April 23, 1923, the daughter of Albert and Florida (mimi) Forgues.
Georgette graduated from Lewiston High School and married Dr. Alfred Vachon following his return from World War II. Widowed at age 36 in 1960, Georgette commuted from Lewiston to Portland to acquire her real estate broker’s license. Georgette and her children Pauline and Armand eventually moved to Old Orchard Beach, where Georgette initially worked as a desk clerk at The Beachwood Hotel. A hardworking and determined woman, Georgette eventually purchased a guesthouse. Her intellect and people skills were recognized when she began a seasonal rental business in Old Orchard.
Georgette married Gerard A. Proulx on June 21, 1966. Together they owned and managed the Seashore Guest House and Seashore Realty.
Georgette was known to be a woman ahead of her time and a force to be reckoned with. She was an astute and successful business woman. Essential to her success was her genuine commitment to people and to hospitality. She embodied and personified welcome, warmth and kindness.
Faith and family were central to Georgette and she readily welcomed strangers and friends alike into her home where she was affectionately known as “Madam Proulx” to the multiple generations of families returning each summer to vacation at the Proulx’s establishments. In particular, many guests from Quebec stayed with the Proulxs, as both spoke French fluently.
She is survived by her husband, Gerard A. Proulx of Montello Heights in Lewiston; her daughter, Dr. Pauline V. Beale and her husband, Dr. William Beeaker, of Turner; her son, Armand A. Vachon of Old Orchard; grandchildren, Andrea and her partner, Lech, of California, Marty and his partner, Sandy and their children, Devin and Arnica of Montana, and Yana and her partner, Talya, of Massachusetts.
In addition to her parents and first husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Armand; and her brother-in-law, Robert Vachon, who was of great support to her following her husband Alfred’s death.
The family expresses its profound gratitude to the Russell Park staff for their compassionate and loving care of Georgette.
