AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine Gov. Paul LePage is ready to commit $35 million to help replace the Memorial Bridge between Kittery and Portsmouth, N.H.
LePage discussed the bridge Tuesday with lawmakers from York and Cumberland counties. The state money is aimed at securing $20 million in federal funding, but that money is now in question. The U.S. House already approved a spending plan that eliminates the funding.
Maine’s deputy transportation commissioner, Bruce Van Note, tells the Portland Press Herald that the bridge replacement will proceed as expected as long as the federal funding comes through.
LePage is opposed to additional state bonding. But Van Note said $55 million is available from bonds approved by the previous Legislature and Maine voters.
