LEWISTON — L/A Arts will offer an oil painting workshop with local artist Michael Ranucci from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays, March 2 to April 6, at the DownStage at L/A Arts.

The six-week workshop will take students through the process of painting a still life or landscape during weekly three-hour sessions. Participants will develop an oil painting in the tradition of the old masters, with special emphasis on composition, light and shadow while they discover a variety of paint application methods such as glazing, scumbling and velatura.

The mystery will be taken out of preliminary drawings, under paintings and developing a painting in layers. There will be an emphasis on individual attention, as well as demonstrations.

“I really like Michael’s approach to the process,”said Jack Donahue, a participant in Ranucci’s last workshop. “He has an easy-going style, but at the same time encourages you to push yourself, even as you work within the parameters of this time-honored technique. I learned a lot about oil painting and about myself as an artist.”

The instructor will have quality photographic references available for subject reference; however, any participants who would like to provide their own subject reference or have other questions regarding the workshop should contact Ranucci at 754-3531 or e-mail at mjranucci@roadrunner.com.

Participants will need to have basic oil painting colors and supplies, specified medium, an easel and a few other miscellaneous items. Ranucci will contact participants with a more detailed list prior to the first class.

The fee is $120 a person. Financial assistance, through the newly created David Footer Scholarship Fund, is available for candidates meeting specified guidelines. Students can learn about and apply for this scholarship, as well as enroll for the workshop, online at www.laarts.org or by contacting L/A Arts at 782-7228.

The DownStage at L/A Arts is located at 5 Canal Street Alley, just off the first block of Pine Street, in downtown Lewiston. Parking is provided for free in the Camden National Bank parking lot.
