DEAR SUN SPOTS: As one of a small group of volunteers with the Rumford Performing Arts Committee, I’m asking for assistance from you and your readers.

After many long and idle years, the historic Rumford Falls Auditorium has seen new life since last year. We’ve put on several plays, a festival of trees and musical entertainment by the Mahoosuc and Coos Canyon bands.

We pride ourselves on being able to provide quality entertainment at nominal cost to River Valley residents, but we are operating on a shoestring budget.

The beautiful wooden seats in the Rumford Falls Auditorium are too hard to sit on for any length of time, and we have some folks with back issues.

In order to make everyone’s evening as pleasant and comfortable as possible, I would like to know if there are any businesses or sewing groups that would donate their time and materials to make seat cushions for 400 chairs. The cushions would be distributed at the door when folks enter the auditorium, and then collected after each show.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions or can help us in any way, please call me. — Mitzi Sequoia, Rumford, 357-2266

ANSWER: That is an awful lot of cushions! Maybe some readers will have suggestions as to how you might obtain them.

Meanwhile, Sun Spots is not a sports fan, but she knows that many aficionados take their own cushions to the stadium. Perhaps you can add that suggestion to your advertising?

Sun Spots has sat on some wooden seats (think Adirondack chairs) that are very comfortable, but that certainly isn’t true for many venues. Perhaps the need to squish more people into a space limits the options for designing comfortable seats?

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Is anyone collecting used books for a mission or community project? Thanks for your help. — Ceneretta Ward, Jay

ANSWER: Sun Spots addressed the used-book question on Feb. 22 and then heard from Gina, who offered the following:

“Thank you for keeping my information on file for taking donated books. My e-mail address has changed. It is now gnpmitch@myfairpoint.net. Note also that we are holding up on taking encyclopedia sets right now and at least for a few months due to storage constraints, but are continuing to accept any and all Christian materials. Thank you!”

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have encyclopedias to give away at 179 Weld Road. — Mary Landry, Wilton

ANSWER: Perhaps an individual will take you up on your offer, but other than Gina in the previous letter, Sun Spots had no other outlet for them. Some transfer stations may recycle them.
