LEWISTON — March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, Maureen Higgins of the Dempsey Center will present a program on “The Colon Connection” at the Center for Wisdom’s Women.
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of death for men and women in Maine. Higgins will discuss how to increase colon health and prevent cancer.
The “Tea, Talk and Travel” series will continue at 10 a.m. Friday, March 18, when Pam Beliveau will discuss Disney World and the Florida Everglades. The program by Susan Hayward of Thorncrag, canceled twice due to snow, has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, March 24. She will speak about Maine wildflowers and birds found in the sanctuary.
The center is exploring offering a women’s Al-Anon group and a trauma recovery and empowerment support group. Al-Anon is for anyone who has (or has had in the past) a family member or close friend with an addiction to alcohol or drugs.
The trauma recovery and empowerment group will be offered by Sarah Wood from the Sexual Assault Crisis Center, who also leads the twice-a-month “Wisdom Circle.” Those interested in either group should call the center.
“Healthy You,” sponsored by USM/LA nursing students, continues each Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tasha Zimkowski and Alisa Belskis provide blood pressure and weight checks and are available for one-on-one conversations about meds and general health-related issues.
Other one-on-one offerings include “Inner Spirit” with Pam Beliveau from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, March 14. She offers 15- to 20-minute conversations for spiritual direction.
Shanna Rogers from the Neighborhood Housing League is at the center from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays to consult with anyone about landlord and tenant issues.
The center hosts a monthly “Laugh Out Loud” (LOL) group, which will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, March 7. The group shares jokes and watches funny You Tube videos.
The QiGong (Chi Gong) class will continue at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 15. It is a simple, relaxing ancient Chinese form of exercise. Denise Dill from St. Mary’s Nutrition Center of Maine will teach her monthly class at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 16. The focus is on eating well on a tight budget and includes sampling of seasonal dishes. Participants go home with a recipe for each dish. At 1 p.m. Thursday, March 17, the center will host a St. Patrick’s Day High Tea.
Regular Monday morning programs include a weekly “Writers Workshop” and “Fibromyalgia Support Group,” and monthly afternoon “Strong Women” or “Red Hat” groups. Other regular offerings are painting and scrapbooking classes, singing and drumming sessions, collage, card making and other crafts.
