100 years ago,1911

The team representing the Lewiston High School of this city defeated Wilton Academy last evening in the first debate in the Bowdoin Interscholastic League. The subject was “Resolved that the United States should establish commercial reciprocity with Canada.” Lewiston had the affirmative side of the question while Wilton had the negative.

50 years ago, 1961

While making some changes in her home, Mrs. Arthur L’Esperance of Lewiston yesterday found four newspapers printed on June 21, 1918, stuffed behind a mirror. Two of the papers were the Cleveland News and the other two were the Philadelphia Press. The advertisements offered item after item at prices which seem impossibly low today.

25 years ago, 1986

The Lewiston Police Department is cracking down on drivers delinquent in paying parking tickets in an effort to collect more than $100,000 in outstanding fines, a police official said Tuesday.

The LPD is reviewing computerized records of parking tickets issued since 1983. The department is now serving notices and summonses to anyone owing more than $10, but will soon approach anyone with an outstanding fine, no matter how small the amount.
