Kirill Kabanov picked a good night to show off his NHL skill set.

The Russian-born speedster netted a pair of goals — his ninth and 10th of the season — including the tying goal with 49 seconds remaining in regulation, helping the Lewiston Maineiacs earn a point, despite a 4-3 shootout loss to the PEI Rocket at the Charlottetown Civic Centre on Friday.

“He has some of the best hands in the league, and he showed that (Thursday),” Maineiacs’ coach J.F. Houle said. “He played a great game for us tonight.

“It was important for us to get the point,” Houle added. “We’re starting to get some of that confidence, some of that momentum back.”

The Maineiacs have taken at least a point from three consecutive games, despite a pair of losses, earning a point in an OT loss to Drummondville on Sunday and a win in Halifax on Thursday before adding a point with the shootout loss Friday.

“Every point matters right now,” Houle said.

Kabanov has been a relative sleeping giant this season. One of the players originally in the conversation among the top skaters available in the 2010 NHL draft, the Maineiacs acquired him from Moncton earlier this season. He’s produced in spurts this season. Friday, the team saw one of those spurts.

With less than a minute to play in regulation, Houle called timeout, set a play and watched.

“That was a great move he made,” Houle said of Kabanov’s final tally.

Samuel Morneau and Filipe Corbo scored on shots three and four for the Rocket in the shootout. Kabanov and his shifty hands added the lone shootout goal for Lewiston.

An early penalty for an elbow to Antoine Houde-Caron turned into the first goal of the game, favoring PEI.

Only 2:05 into the contest, Ben Duffy, the Rocket’s leading scorer, beat Champion to hoist the host team to a 1-0 advantage.

The Maineiacs netted the equalizer, and relied on PEI native and team captain Cameron Critchlow for the goal. Only 3:41 after the Rocket scored, Critchlow converted a feed from Sam Henley into his 13th score of the season, knotting the game at a goal apiece.

Lewiston surrendered another goal on a PEI power play early in the second frame, when Andrej Nestrasil netted his 17th of the season, and the Rocket pushed their lead to 3-1 at 16:12 on Olivier Croteau’s sixth of the year.

“The guys never hung their heads, and we battled back,” Houle said. “I really think we outplayed them for most of the game. Their goalie made some great saves.”

The Maineiacs responded only 1:04 later when Kabanov tipped the puck past PEI keeper Evan Mosher on a shot from the point by Zach Shannon. Etienne Brodeur, looking to reach 50 goals on the season, picked up an assist on Kabanov tally.

Lewiston outshot PEI 42-30 on the game, and Mosher earned first star honors.

The Maineiacs complete their three-in-three road trip Saturday with another game against PEI in Charlottetown. Lewiston returns home to face Gatineau for a pair Friday and Sunday next weekend before finishing the season on the road the following weekend.
