Androscoggin County Commissioners have all but abandoned plans to find a privately owned place for a juvenile detention center somewhere in the Lewiston-Auburn community.

The idea just has not been popular, said Commissioner James E. Dougherty.

Now, officials are hoping to convert space in the basement of the County Building to a four-or-five-bed detention center for wayward children.

“I’ve been looking for a place since April of last year and wherever we’ve gone, they don’t want us. They say they don’t want those bad kids in our neighborhood,” Dougherty said Friday.
