February and March are the toughest months for snow days, said SAD 44 Superintendent David Murphy.
This year is no exception.
As of Monday, when students and teachers got a day off because of snow, sleet and rain, the district had used all five snow days built into the school schedule.
Monday’s snow day is the second consecutive Monday off for the same reason.
If weather cooperates and no more days off are used, students will get out of school for the year on June 14. If weather necessitates more snow days, then additional days will be tacked onto the end of the school year.
As of right now, the graduation date for seniors, June 3, is not affected.
Murphy said each year is different, and sometimes flooding in April causes some problems, as well.
All after-school activities were also canceled but because early March is between sports seasons, nothing has to be rescheduled.
In the Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10, classes were also canceled.
Superintendent Tom Ward said his district does not build in snow days, but instead, adds class days onto the end of the school year. This is the Rumford, Dixfield and Buckfield areas’ fifth snow day also.
With five used, the original last day of school of June 6 has been extended to June 13. Additional snow days will result in a longer school year.
He said the graduation dates have not yet been affected by the number of snow days taken. As it stands now, Mountain Valley High School seniors will graduate on June 2; Dirigo on June 3, and Buckfield, June 4.
All after-school sports and other events were also canceled in the three areas.
