RUMFORD — Black Mountain ski area will celebrate its 50th birthday the weekend of March 11-13.

On Sunday, tickets for skiing and tubing will cost $3, the same as the first season in 1960-61.

Also on Sunday, a ski race for youngsters age 8 and under will take place at 10 a.m. in the novice area, program director Jen LeDuc said.

“There’s a new group of kids who is interested in racing,” she said.

Registration for the children’s race is $3.

A giant slalom race for all ages begins at 1 p.m. Sunday, with a registration fee of $5. The festivities will wrap up with a family potluck dinner at 5 p.m. in the Last Run Lounge.

A once popular community winter carnival event, a cross-country classic citizen race is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $5. Downhill skiing from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. is offered at $20. Tubing takes place from noon until 4 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m.

Free cross-country skiing is offered all day at the mountain.

Saturday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. brings a Founders Day dinner where many of the original people critical to the formation of Black Mountain of Maine will attend. Among them are Muriel Arsenault and former Olympic skier Chummy Broomhall.

Black Mountain board member Paul Jones said anyone, or a representative of their family, who had received a lifetime membership when Black Mountain began in 1960 is a founder.

Reservations for the dinner may be made by calling 364-8977. Community relations volunteer Craig Zurhorst will present a short history of the mountain after dinner.

From 7 to 10 p.m., guitarist and singer-songwriter Jim Gallant will play in the Last Run Lounge. His brothers Mike and Tim will join him.

The mountain closes for the season on March 27.
