PARIS — A Roxbury man charged in an alleged cocaine smuggling ring pleaded not guilty in Oxford County Superior Court on Tuesday to charges of attempted trafficking of scheduled drugs and violating condition of release.

Kaine A. Hodgkins, 22, of 679 Roxbury Notch Road, was one of five indicted last month on drug charges in connection with an alleged drug ring that was moving cocaine from Massachusetts to the Rumford area.

According to Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agent Tony Milligan, Hodgkins assisted Timothy Clark, 40, of Mexico, who is accused of making several trips to Massachusetts per week to pick up cocaine for distribution in Maine.

Clark and another suspect, Dale Korhonen, 42, of Jay, were scheduled for arraignments Tuesday but the proceedings were postponed until April 15.

On Tuesday, Hodgkins also entered a not guilty plea to charges of eluding an officer, operating after suspension, criminal speeding, driving to endanger and unsworn falsification after a high-speed chase in September.

In September, Rumford officer Lawrence Winson spotted a 2003 Pontiac sedan driving erratically on Route 120. He turned on his blue lights and began following the car. He ended up chasing the sedan at high speeds before finding the vehicle stopped and seeing a woman flee.

The next day, Hodgkins and Christa Casey, 22, of Peru, who owned the car, went to the Rumford Police Station to report the car stolen. After the interview, both were arrested.

Hodgkins paid the $1,000 cash bail for the earlier charges and put up $10,000 worth of property to pay the bail on the trafficking charge. His bail conditions include no use or possession of illegal drugs and Hodgkins is subject to random searches.

Hodgkins is set to appear in court July 6 at 8:30 a.m.
